In a unusual political gimmick, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today organized nationwide one day fast as a mark of protest against disruption of Parliament by the Congress in the last budget session. However, it could not be passed due to disturbances given in the proceedings of the Parliament by the opposition Congress.
State Youth Congress secretary Rakesh Sahu on Thursday said it was time for the BJP to prepare for "vanvaas" (renunciation) and not "upvaas" (fast). The government also suspended the Unnao Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The "Gram Swaraj" exercise, which will continue till May 5, will be aimed at fulfilling the dreams of these stalwarts, he said, asking the party's representatives to fan out in villages to ensure that people there get benefits of government schemes. "It is our responsibility to inform the country that the government was not responsible for the disruption", the BJP leader added. The fast was however accompanied with slip ups by the party which had put it on a defensive spot. The video was shot at around 1 pm when the BJP leaders, including the PM, were on a nationwide fast. According to sources, Shah told the state leaders that the party had been in power at the Centre for four years and there had been several attempts from critics as well as opposition to "malign" its leaders and the government. But if the reason were to be taken into account, he would be the first prime minister to undertake a fast against his political opponents. More recently, Hazare held a fast last month in Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.
Amnesty Lauds Progress in Death Penalty Abolition
Amnesty International recorded a noticeable decrease in the overall number of executions carried out for drug-related offences. In 2017, Amnesty campaigned on the case of Jack Greene, who was convicted in 1992 of the murder of Sidney Burnett.
BJP MPs have been asked to spend at least a night in one such village, while Union ministers will spend two nights in different parts of the country during the exercise.
Union Minister Suresh Prabhu and Vijay Goel also participated in the protest here.
The BJP alleged that the Congress did not allow parliament to function, initially on account of the bank scams.
