(L-R) Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Robert Karlsson, Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald are announced as 2018 Ryder Cup Vice Captain's by Captain Thomas Bjorn (C) during previews for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on May 22, 2018 in Virginia Water, England.
Lee Westwood "jumped at the chance" to be a vice-captain in this year's Ryder Cup, even though it nearly certainly signals an end to his remarkable playing record in the contest.
Westwood has made 10 consecutive appearances as a player since making his debut in 1997, the only other time the tournament has been held in continental Europe, while Harrington returns to the role he previously held for both Paul McGinley at Gleneagles and Darren Clarke two years ago.
"So when Thomas asked me to take that role I was obviously delighted and jumped at the chance". Having been fortunate to play in the last ten matches, I am actually looking forward to contributing to Europe's cause in a slightly different way at this year's contest. Who knows, one of them may even spring a surprise victory or two and qualify for the team in a playing capacity.
'The fact I won't be able to play for another month means that making the team would be a long shot, so that helped, ' conceded Donald.

Instead, it has become more of a crisis session after Pyongyang last week threatened to pull out of the planned summit. It remains uncertain when the train will depart for the nuclear-testing site in Kilju, North Hamgyong Province.
And although the 45-year-old and his fellow vice-captains could still qualify to face the United States in Paris from September 28 to 30, Westwood (117th) is the only one of the five now ranked inside the world's top 200.
"My four Ryder Cup appearances have been the greatest experiences so far of my career", McDowell said. I don't think the Americans will underestimate us if that's where we're getting to.
"It is a huge honour to be announced as one of Captain Bjørn's backroom staff and comforting to me that I will be in Paris in some shape or form this year".
Europe will aim to regain the trophy after being defeated by the United States in Hazeltine, Minnesota, two years ago.
Europe is adding a wealth of Ryder Cup experience for the team room with four more assistants to captain Thomas Bjorn.
