It had come to the administration's notice that some anti-social/national elements could contaminate communal harmony by spreading fake news and rumours through videos, using internet services, his order said. In connection with the issue, the city witnessed a clash on Thursday between students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and the police. While right-wing activists and ruling party members have demanded the removal of Jinnah's portrait, the students' union insists that the historical figure deserves representation on the campus in his capacity as the founder member of the university court.
The students also offered Friday prayers at the scene of the sit-in, while a large number of teachers and other members of the AMU fraternity participated.
The row started after local BJP MP Satish Gautam wrote to AMU raising objections to the portrait.
He said that Jinnah's portrait had been hanging in the hall since 1938 but nobody objected to it because everyone understood the logic behind the portrait's continued presence at the hall.
The Aligarh Muslim University Students Union (AMUSU) in a statement said that the campus had virtually been converted into a fortress with the personnel of Rapid Action Force and the police deployed all over.
