The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was nearly $2.68 Wednesday, up 6 cents over the past month and 57 cents more than one year ago, according to AAA.
"These prices have had an impact with consumers", said Dan McTeague, a senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.
"The difference in a tank of gas for me is like 5 or 6 bucks so it's not really a deal breaker for me at the moment", said Keeden Hopkins, a Greenville resident. Things like the economic sanctions on Iran, higher crude oil prices and higher demand are all fueling the higher prices at the pump.
That's a five-percent increase from last year and the highest number of travelers in more than a dozen years.
He said OPEC leaders are meeting next month and could possibly decide to increase production, which could help keep prices under the $3 mark for the summer.
Today and Friday are expected to be the busiest days for travel. That's about an increase of a penny since last week, but still well below the record price of $4.70 set in October 2012.
The bad news? At a national average of $2.95 per gallon as of Wednesday.
