President Trump hosted a sanctuary state roundtable at the White House Wednesday, bringing together roughly 20 representatives and elected officials from cities throughout California who oppose the sanctuary state law passed by the left-leaning legislature.
While immigration policy discussions have been generating controversy for some time, sanctuary cities themselves turned into a political hot topic previous year, when the Trump administration issued an executive order threatening to revoke federal grant funding from local jurisdictions it deemed uncooperative regarding immigration enforcement.
Meanwhile, he is continuing to push for more deportations from the country, including through increased local law enforcement involvement with ICE, even though local officials say that would be counterproductive to other policing efforts.
The Washington State Patrol cooperates with criminal federal immigration investigations, State Patrol spokesman Kyle Moore said in an email.
"To me, that's obstruction of justice", President Trump said.
"We have to break up families", he said.
The officials, including Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel and officials from Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano and Los Alamitos, hailed from counties and cities that have taken stances against the law, some by joining or filing briefs in support of a Trump administration lawsuit challenging it. Jerry Brown a year ago that bars police from asking people about their immigration status or helping federal agents with immigration enforcement.
He has called on Congress repeatedly in recent months to enact stricter laws to limit the number of immigrants who come across the US-Mexico border.

"Each of you has bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws", Trump said at the White House. "Their decision to convene this meeting is about fueling fear of immigrants and scapegoating entire communities".
Also Wednesday, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced in the two days since his department's law enforcement officers were sent to the southern border, more than a dozen arrests have been made. He echoed the sentiments of numerous other public officials, thanking Trump for his work.
"States are obligated to follow, and local governments are obligated to follow federal law, and federal law is supreme under the Constitution", he said.
"Mexico does nothing for us, they do nothing for us", he said. "Not the people who are seeking a better life in America".
Trump has previously referred to unauthorized immigrants involved in gang activities as "animals".
"We're taking people out of the country". He said the leaders were "working with the administration".
