U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have agreed to hold their first formal summit in the coming weeks - with a final announcement of the timing and location of the meeting to be announced simultaneously by the White House and the Kremlin on Thursday.
President Donald Trump pushed Russia's version of events on alleged election meddling on Thursday, with a tweet that advanced conspiracy theories while questioning U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
"There are a wide range of issues despite the differences between us where both President Trump and President Putin feel they can find constructive solutions", Bolton said. Putin, who has repeatedly denied allegations of having interfered with the 2016 US presidential election, discussed Syria, the denuclearization of North Korea, and Russian involvement in the Ukraine with Bolton earlier. At the G7 meeting, itself, Trump reportedly told America's European allies that "NATO is as bad as NAFTA".
For the early part of his presidency, Trump's indifference to the details of geopolitics allowed the administration's Establishment figures to dictate much of his foreign policy.
Putin had two brief meetings with Trump on the sidelines of worldwide summits a year ago, but plans for a full-fledged summit had been delayed amid the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Congressional probes into alleged Russia-Trump ties that Trump has dismissed as a "witch hunt". After Mr Trump and Mr Putin met briefly in Vietnam in November, 2017, Mr Trump was criticised in the United States for saying he believed Mr Putin when the Russian President denied accusations that Russia meddled in the 2016 election. That's he what did after the June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which has thus far yielded little more than a vague agreement on previously stated positions.
"At the height of the cold war, American presidents of both parties had productive summits with leaders of the Soviet Union", Sen. "We hope it will play a very important role in helping begin the normalization of Russia-US ties".
In a Twitter post on Thursday before the Helsinki meeting was announced, Trump again appeared to cast doubt on Russian involvement.
"Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election!"
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said it was best not to get too excited about what the summit might yield.
