The Cavaliers also tried to keep James, reportedly being on the phone with him seconds after midnight Sunday as the free agency period opened. The Lakers are considered strong candidates to sign James, but he also has an offseason home in L.A. He thanked Cavaliers fans in an Instagram post, saying the city will always be his home. That likely played a part in Caldwell-Pope securing a deal, too. Before he joined the Heat, James had meetings with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, where team representatives pitched the All-Star with personalized presentations and marketing plans.
