There are five different designs, each representing a decade in which the Big Mac has been sold: The '70s showcases flower power; the '80s focuses on pop art; the '90s has some abstract shapes; the '00s suggests tech advancements (that seemed cool more than a decade ago); and the '10s coin is meant to call attention "to the evolution of communication", according to McDonald's. In 2007, the Big Mac Museum Restaurant was established in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, to honor the juicy burger. No matter where they live in the world, Big Mac fans recognize the two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun as the iconic burger with a flavor combination that's just as craveable and delicious as the day it was introduced.
McDonald's iconic Big Mac turns 50 today and to mark the occasion, the company has unveiled the "Mac Coin".
'So we wanted a global celebration as unique as the burger itself.
Customers will receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac on Thursday, August 2.
The fast food giant plans to distribute more than 6.2 million MacCoins while supplies last. It's loosely based off the Big Mac Index, an idea first published by the Economist that used burgers to measure a nation's purchasing power parity.

"When my great-grandfather Jim Delligatti invented the Big Mac at his grill in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he just wanted to make his local customers happy", fourth-generation McDonald's owner-operator Nick Delligatti said in a release.
After similar results at more stores, the Big Mac was added to the national menu in 1968.
"We are proud to be able to offer Kiwis 50,000 of these MacCoins from 2 August", director of marketing, McDonald's NZ Jo Mitchell said.
As with many of McDonald's popular and long-lasting menu items, the idea for the Big Mac came from a franchisee.
