American Miocic (18-2) enters the fight as the longest-reining heavyweight champion in the history of UFC and will hope to utilise his striking prowess and go blow-for-blow with Cormier. It's a clash between two likable heavy hitters who, pardon the worn cliché, leave it all out on the mat every time they throw down.
Several years ago, Cormier and Jon Jones brawled off the stage following a press conference. Now he gets a chance to do something Jones never has and that is rule the heavyweight division. Like I don't even know when this guy's gonna be back so I think when we get more clarity in regards to when he's coming back, I can make more of a decision. Miocic is the UFC heavyweight champion. So, whether he can maintain that pace for an entire 25-minute fight with Cormier, we'll see. Just look at what he did to headhunter Volkan Oezdemir in his last fight. "So this will be the first time he's fighting somebody that can do everything".
Cormier has an uncanny ability to deflect blows from much taller opponents by keeping his hands loose and forward instead of using a traditional boxing stance where the hands are held tightly near the head. The hard-punching OH native has claimed KO or TKO victories on five occasions during his current six-fight win streak, including four straight first-round knockouts that earned him performance bonuses, and owns an impressive 18-2-0 professional MMA record. But when they stepped on the scales Friday morning, Cormier (246 pounds) actually outweighed Miocic (242 1/2). Cormier stayed on the ground for a few seconds before getting up. But that said, do yourself a favor and bury your bookmaker this Saturday night and watch Cormier become a two-division UFC champ.
UFC 226 will be taking place in T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday, July 7, with the main event fight at 7pm PT, 10pm ET, 3am Sunday BST and midday Sunday AEST.
He's defended the heavyweight title more than any champion before him, but the renown that usually comes with that has been slow to arrive.
Penalty hero Pickford says he did the homework
But it was Pickford's acrobatics that ensured the win was a comfortable one. The England goalkeeper ( Pickford ) is 10 centimetres smaller than me.
However, the eagerly-anticipated bout was scrapped on Wednesday night as Holloway was suffering from concussion-like symptoms.
It just seems as though the UFC can't catch a break these days.
The UFC is on its home turf in "Sin City" this week for the annual International Fight Week and a pay-per-view event with a major title fight.
In that sense, they're kindred spirits, so there is no bad blood or trash talk on display as the bout approaches.
