The indictments were filed by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is investing possible collusion between the presidential campaign of President Donald Trump and the Russian spies United States intelligence agencies say interfered with the 2016 election.

As Republicans continue to try and debunk the Special Counsel probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Robert Mueller has been working behind closed doors on his investigation.

The indictment alleges that "in or around August 2016, [Russian military officer] KOVALEV and his co-conspirators hacked into the computers of a US vendor ("Vendor 1") that supplied software used to verify voter registration information for the 2016 USA elections".

The charges include counts of criminal conspiracy, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to launder money, and conspiracy to hack into the computers of state boards and elections.

This all comes just before President Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A statement from the White House did not address the allegations of Russian government interference and focused only on what was not in the indictment.

"There's no allegation that the conspiracy changed the vote count or affected any election result."

Mr Rosenstein said he had briefed Mr Trump about the indictment before today's announcement and that there was no allegation that USA citizens were involved in the alleged crimes.

The revelations provide more detail on the sophisticated assault on the United States election in 2016, including the release of emails created to damage Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. This person, who remains unidentified, wanted stolen documents, and the conspirators responded with documents on the candidate's opponent, the indictment said. The deputy attorney general added that the defendants worked for two units of the Russian intelligence service, the GRU.

Rosenstein said there is no allegation that USA citizens were involved in the alleged crimes described in the indictment.

Count Ten charges those eleven conspirators with money laundering for transferring cryptocurrencies through a web of transactions in order to purchase computer servers, register domains, and make other payments in furtherance of their hacking activities, while trying to hide their connections to Russian Federation.

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", he said.

The Russian government has so far declined to extradite the people named, although one American attorney has been arguing the case in Washington on their behalf.

"In an effort to pay for their efforts around the world. the defendants paid for it with cryptocurrency", deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said during a press briefing.

The wreckage of what Robert Mueller's team says were Russian strikes on the U.S. can be measured in damaged reputations and disrupted politics.

Trump has subsequently said he was speaking in jest.

Rosenstein said that his team had determined that these 12 Russians were also behind the websites "DCLeaks" and "Guccifer 2.0", which they used to release information that they had stolen through hacking and spearphishing. The investigation, which is being carried out by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, has already indicted 20 people and three companies.
