Norwegian Getaway cruise ship crew member rescued from ocean off Cuba

A Norwegian Cruise Line crew member apparently treaded water for nearly 22 hours before being spotted in the waters off Cuba by the crew of a passing Carnival Cruise ship.

The unidentified 33-year-old went overboard as the Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Getaway sailed back to Miami on Saturday, the cruise line said.

A cruise ship worker who fell overboard survived 22 hours in the water before being picked up by another vessel. The Coast Guard was alerted and started searching for him.

On Sunday, crew and guests aboard another cruise ship, the Carnival Glory, saw him in the water and saved him. "We had a Coast Guard cutter join the search".

The Getaway crew member was found alive at about 1 p.m. Sunday 21 miles north of Cuba and in stable condition. "The Coast Guard was notified and a search and rescue operation ensued near western Cuba". The man's identity has not been revealed, and the circumstances surrounding his fall into the water have not been established.
