Dozens of people were injured as an airliner crashed on takeoff during a heavy hailstorm in northern Mexico, engulfing the plane in flames, the airline and passengers said Tuesday.

"It is confirmed that there have been no deaths from the flight #AM2431 accident", tweeted Jose Rosas, the governor of Durango state where the crash occurred. Father Esequiel Sanchez of Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe church in northwest suburban Des Plaines was injured in the crash, the church said.

The mid-sized jet was nearly full, with 103 people including two infants and four crew members on board, when it crashed at about 4 p.m. local time (2100 GMT), authorities said.

Romulo Campuzano, head of a political party in Durango state who was on the plane, told Foro TV that both wings were on fire as he bolted from the aircraft.

Israel Solano Mejia, director of the city civil protection agency, told reporters "almost everyone walked away (from the accident) on their own".

Officials and witnesses differ on whether the plane either fell shortly after takeover or ran off the runway without really gaining altitude. The plane had barely taken off when it felt like it was hit by a strong air current, another passenger told network Televisa.

The plane landed in a field near where it took off at the General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport.

The official Twitter account of the State Coordination of Civil Protection for Durango posted images from the crash site.

The airline said it is working to verify any information and obtain more details. He said there were 97 passengers and four crew members aboard.

But remarkably, no one was killed when the Aeromexico jet came down in Durango, according to the state governor.

It said the plane involved was an Embraer 190 with a capacity of 100 passengers.

There were no reported fatalities according to Aispuro, Secretary of Communications and Transportation Gerardo Ruiz Esparza and the airline.

The BBC says there are at least 80 people on board.

Embraer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lines of ambulances are seen waiting at the site.
