The 55-year-old's primary rivals have poked holes in her congressional voting record and criticized her for being too conservative and not progressive enough to be the Democratic nominee.
On the Democratic side, the Sanders-backed Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum won an upset victory over the establishment candidate, former Rep. Gwen Graham (D-Fla.), to win the gubernatorial nomination.
As noted in one of the tweets above, David Bossie, president of Citizens United and a member of DeSantis' team, was the guy who used the phrase "cotton-pickin' mind" towards a black panel member on Fox News earlier this summer. "We won't be able to win if we moderate our views and make candidates seem like Republican-lite".
But criticism aimed at Mr DeSantis continued, with Democratic senator Bill Nelson saying the comments were "unacceptable in civilised discourse".
His comments brought a swift rebuke from Terrie Rizzo, chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, who said they were racially tinged.
DeSantis based almost his entire campaign around the president, and acknowledged after the victory that Trump's endorsement was the key.
But Trump's endorsement was the biggest factor in swinging the race to DeSantis. An indictment? No way, says Gillum, claiming he has nothing to hide. He will attack Gillum's record as mayor of Tallahassee, which includes an ongoing FBI investigation of possible corruption at city hall related to development deals.
Gillum finished strong in each of Florida's major cities, including Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and his home city of Tallahassee.
Federal Bureau of Investigation dismisses Trump's claim China hacked every email from Hillary's secret server
Actually, a very big story. "Much classified information!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday. He added: "We do know the name of the company.
President Donald Trump, whose endorsement of Ron DeSantis was pivotal in Florida's Republican primary for governor, signaled this morning that he plans to get involved in the general election as well.
On the Republican side, DeSantis, a US congressman from the Jacksonville area, stomped Adam Putnam, a former congressman and current Commissioner of Agriculture in Florida, with more than 56 percent of the vote.
Gillum scored a surprise victory in Tuesday's Democratic primary for one the United States' most competitive races for governor.
If elected, Gillum would be the first black governor of Florida.
Robust Republican turnout wasn't isolated to Florida, either.
Marquez Peterson beat Brandon Martin, Danny Morales and Casey Welch in Tuesday's primary for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District.
While Trump held off endorsing any of the three Republicans in a contentious U.S. Senate battle in Arizona, the candidates all spent the final stretch of the campaign touting their allegiance to him.
Cate said that approach would also let Gillum rake in campaign contributions, something he struggled to do during the primary.
The governor's race, in a state sure to be a battleground in the 2020 presidential election, will essentially be a referendum on Trump.
