An air strike near a United States base in southeastern Syria has killed at least eight pro-government fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Monday.

According to unnamed officials and intelligence sources cited by multiple media outlets, the air base was the target of an airstrike or missile attack, and Syrian air defenses responded.Some reports suggested that there had been three explosions, targeting a research center in Jamraya near Damascus and a military depot, which suffered a direct hit.

Several strikes against the Syrian government or allied forces have been in the past attributed to USA forces deployed as part of a multinational coalition against the Islamic State (IS) group. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that two military men were killed and another 11 were wounded.

AFP's correspondents in Damascus heard multiple blasts overnight, one of which lit up the sky in a deep red hue, but reported calm on Sunday morning.
