The development follows last week's announcement that co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, CEO and CTO, respectively, were leaving the photo-sharing social network.

Facebook has named Adam Mosseri, a 10-year veteran at the company, as the head of Instagram.

After Instagram co-founder's recent departure from its folds, Facebook found itself called upon to choose a new chief for the image-sharing subsidiary. "These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we're excited for Adam to carry them forward".

In his blog post, Mr Systrom praised Mr Mosseri's "strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity - as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community".

USA says Chinese destroyer came dangerously close to United States ship
After the Chinese ship came within 45 yards (41 metres) of Decatur's bow it moved to prevent a collision, the report said. Navy ships during previous FONOPs in the South China Sea, but Sunday's encounter appears to the be the closest one yet.

Mosseri, according to his LinkedIn profile, joined Facebook as a product designer in July 2008, working his way up the corporate ladder over the years.

But if you're like me and already felt that Instagram had lost its way years ago - perhaps around the time it started pilling on cloned features such as Stories - then you can blame Systrom and Krieger, who stuck around for years as Mark Zuckerberg used the app to destroy Snapchat. He succeeds Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, who abruptly announced their departure on September 24th.

Though the move was widely expected, it lines up with speculation that Facebook has been looking to increase control over Instagram. He was recruited to the Instagram team recently. "We believe that Adam will hold true to these values and that Instagram will continue to thrive". Instagram is generally seen as a more uplifting space and remains popular with teens and young people, which has been a challenge for Facebook.

In Mosseri's role leading Instagram, he will oversee all functions of the business. This summer, Instagram topped 1 billion monthly active users and has 25 million businesses that maintain accounts on the service.
