In Florida, Democrat Andrew Gillum lost his attempt to become the state's first black governor, suffering a narrow defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis in a racially charged contest that drew national attention.

Gillum was attempting to become Florida's first African-American governor but faced a string of racist attacks from outside groups and DeSantis, who told Floridians not to "monkey this up".

Rick Scott, who left the governor's mansion to run for the Senate, squeezed out Bill Nelson, the veteran centrist Democrat.

Heather Miller, of Fort Lauderdale, doesn't remember seeing the U.S. Senate and a U.S. House race on her vote-by-mail ballot.

Democratic strategist Steve Vancore also said Florida tilts toward Republicans in statewide races.

Back in August, Gillum made history by winning Florida's Democratic primary for governor.

In one final twist, DeSantis, who throughout the campaign portrayed Tallahassee as crime-ridden and unsafe, will now be moving their to do his new job - right alongside the city's mayor, (still) Andrew Gillum.

Pakistan's foreign reserves have plunged 42 percent since the start of the year and now stand at about $8 billion. Both the USA and Pakistani officials, however, say that she was arrested in Afghanistan.

Gillum held a small but consistent lead in the available public polling throughout the general election campaign, but Republicans were confident their voter turnout operation ― built by former Gov. Jeb Bush and refined over the past decade ― would deliver them the necessary votes.

DeSantis won with 49.7 percent of the votes, with ballots in his favour totalling 4,052,118 votes.

The Tallahassee mayor conceded the race to Republican Ron DeSantis in a televised concession speech around 11 p.m. ET on election night.

Republicans, meanwhile, were eyeing potential pickups in CT and OR, both traditionally Democratic states. "I still plan to be on the front lines alongside every one of you when it comes to standing up and fighting for what we believe in". "That race was swung by Donald Trump to DeSantis, who's now behind".

The former GOP congressman spent weeks explaining the remark, maintaining it had nothing to do with race, but rather his belief that Gillum would hurt Florida's economy. DeSantis once aired an ad showing him and his daughter building a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border while his young son wore a "Make America Great Again" onesie. "So ignore him and vote, Florida!"

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis was set to become the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a USA state, after NBC News projected him to win against Republican Walker Stapleton.
