Some 75,000 homes were ordered evacuated in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, with the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeting: "imminent threat", adding that "Malibu lakes residents must leave area immediately".

Authorities fear the fire, fueled by strong winds, could reach Chico - a city of 90,000 people where many Butte County families already have evacuated to shelters.

As of Friday morning, the Hill Fire had charred 6,100 acres in the Camarillo area, while the Woolsey Fire had blackened 14,000 acres and destroyed a significant number of structures after starting in Woolsey Canyon east of Simi Valley, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
