The SpaceX booster missed its landing zone on the ground after liftoff, however, and ended up in the sea just a couple of miles offshore.

SpaceX on Wednesday had trouble sticking the landing with one of its reusable rockets.
The cause of the rocket's spin, according to Musk, was a stalling out of one of the rocket's "grid fin hydraulic pump".

All these objects were launched onboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. In other words, Falcon 9 performed fine during ascent and only exhibited off-nominal behavior during the booster's attempted landing after separating from the upper stage and Dragon payload. It also becomes the 20th overall launch conducted by Elon Musk's company in a single year, an absolute record for any space operator, be it government-owned or privately operated.
It was initially meant to take off Tuesday, but was delayed for a day after engineers discovered moldy mouse food in one of the science investigations created to study the effect of microgravity on the immune system.
