The live feed from the rocket cut away on the SpaceX webcast, but video from people in the media area at the cape showed the Falcon 9 appearing to regain control before making an unplanned landing in the water rather than ashore at the landing area.
The 5,600 pounds of cargo were blasted into space successfully on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The SpaceX booster missed its landing zone on the ground after liftoff, however, and ended up in the sea just a couple of miles offshore.
Minutes later, the rocket's first stage performed a so-called boost back maneuver and landed on an unmanned ship in the Pacific.

All these objects were launched onboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. In other words, Falcon 9 performed fine during ascent and only exhibited off-nominal behavior during the booster's attempted landing after separating from the upper stage and Dragon payload. It also becomes the 20th overall launch conducted by Elon Musk's company in a single year, an absolute record for any space operator, be it government-owned or privately operated.
It was initially meant to take off Tuesday, but was delayed for a day after engineers discovered moldy mouse food in one of the science investigations created to study the effect of microgravity on the immune system.
"This mission signifies Spaceflight's first dedicated rideshare mission to a sun synchronous low-Earth orbit and represents our company's effort to accommodate the growing number of domestic, international, government, and commercial customers seeking affordable rideshare options to launch their spacecraft into orbit", a Spaceflight spokesperson stated.
