According to reports, Finney died of a chest infection at the Royal Marsden hospital, which specialises in cancer treatment, just outside London.
He was nominated four times for a best actor Oscar and once in the best supporting actor category.
In later years, Finney only gave rare interviews to press, but speaking to the Manchester Evening News back in 2013, he revealed the reason he went into the acting profession.
"It seems silly to go over there and beg for an award", he told the paper.
A man of the people: Finney was raised in what he called a "lower middle class" home, the son of a bookmaker.
Instead, he teamed up with Richardson again for the 1963 film version of Henry Fielding's classic comic novel Tom Jones.
The actor maintained a healthy skepticism about the British establishment and even turned down a knighthood when it was offered, declining to become Sir Albert. That's the thing you very rarely get, I think. "And it also helps keep us 'quaint, ' which I'm not a great fan of". "... Finney will be warmly remembered for his powerful performances in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Tom Jones, Big Fish and many more".
This was to be a familiar pattern, with Finney alternating between film work and stage productions in London and NY.
Khashoggi murder 'planned and perpetrated'
It has arrested several senior Saudi officials, but the murder plunged the kingdom into one of its worst diplomatic crises. On Thursday she provided an assessment of her visit to Turkey to pursue the investigation, from 28 January and 3 February.
In the ensuing decade, Finney's status as an established star saw him appear in a wide variety of material, including a mainstream musical (Scrooge), a low-budget crime comedy (Gumshoe, Stephen Frears' directorial debut) and the star-packed Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express, in which he played Hercule Poirot. The role brought Finney his fourth Oscar nomination.
Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the co-producers of Eon Productions, led tributes to the late actor, best known for roles in Tom Jones, Erin Brockovich and Annie.
Finney was nominated for an Oscar five times and began his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company before rising to fame in film.
His work also helped propel Roberts to her first Best Actress Oscar.
However, he's never been one to take such awards too seriously, and would rarely attend the ceremonies.
He also produced several projects (albeit uncredited), and he directed two movies, but his net worth is surprisingly low for someone with such a long and successful career.
Legendary actor Albert Finney died yesterday, of an unknown cause.
Albert married three times in his life, with his most recent wife, Pene Delmage, walking down the aisle with him in 2006.
