If the social order is disrupted by the students' refusal to attend school, then the system is forced to face the climate crisis and enact change. In a speech at the United Nations in December, Thunberg said: "You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes".

On Friday, thousands of schoolchildren are expected to strike again against climate change in more than 100 countries around the world, including New Zealand.

The global strike was inspired by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who decided last August she was going to miss school on Fridays and picket outside the Rikstag, otherwise known as the Swedish parliament, to raise awareness about global warming instead.

"If you're panicked right now, good", the Washtenaw International High School student said Friday, March 15 during the Washtenaw County Climate Strike on the University of Michigan Diag.

Some politicians have criticized the students, suggesting they should be spending their time in school, not on the streets.

This is a rapidly growing worldwide movement that flowed from Greta's individual decision on 20 August a year ago to take Friday off school to sit on the ground outside the Swedish Parliament Building in Stockholm demanding change.

"A movement of deregulation, it really concerns me, because we can see the direct correlation between fossil fuel practices, carbon emissions, the greenhouse effect and climate change as a whole", said CU Boulder student Mike Jacobs. "The youth hereby declare a national emergency on climate change".

Forman: We're hoping to impact the business leaders and politicians who refuse to accept the situation. This is a movement and we won't give up until they take appropriate action.

Thousands marched through central London with banners reading "The future is in our hands" and "We're missing lessons to teach you one". "If no one wants to fight for me, I'm going to have to fight for myself". This strike isn't just a protest, it's also a symbol of moving forward and making progress on climate change legislation.
